March 16, 2004 - North Hastings Scenic Route Project receives $30,000 Grant from Bell Canada’s Community Development Fund - Bancroft, Ontario
The North Hastings Scenic Route Project in Bancroft is one of 19 successful organizations, selected from a field of 132 applicants from across Ontario, to receive a grant from Bell Canada’s 2003 Community Development Fund. The North Hastings Scenic Route Project is receiving $30,000, as part of Bell Canada’s three-year, $1 million commitment to community-based projects throughout Ontario.
“It’s extremely rewarding to assist in funding such innovative programs”, said Terry Mosey, Executive Vice President, Bell Canada. “Bell Canada has always been committed to communities in Ontario, and it’s gratifying to see the positive impact that improved communication technology will have on these organizations.”
The North Hastings Scenic Route Project plans to develop a new website that uses GIS technology to map the three existing scenic routes in the area. This technology will allow site visitors to create custom detailed maps targeting their specific points of interest along any North Hastings Scenic Route. They hope to expand the project in 2004 by mapping 10 new scenic routes in seven other municipalities in North Hastings.
“The project is truly about encouraging the discovery and exploration of this region”, says Bob Cloes, Manager, Community Futures Development Corporation of North & Central Hastings and South Algonquin. “With the assistance from Bell Canada’s Community Development Fund, we are able to integrate global positioning systems, high accuracy digital mapping and wireless mobile field computing to meet people’s needs in a customized way.”
Bell Canada’s Community Development Fund was founded in 2001, to help community-based organizations improve the economic and social framework of their communities through upgraded communications technology. Building from the Bell Canada Economic Development Fund, this initiative has committed $1 million to 42 Ontario communities in three years.
