BOBCAYGEON, Ontario, July 25, 2007 — Haliburton–Kawartha Lakes–Brock MP Barry Devolin, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor, today announced a federal contribution of $290,000 to the Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) in support of the corporation’s ongoing operations over the next year.

Canada’s New Government is proud of our partnership with the Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation.  By working together, we have fostered economic development, job creation and self-reliant communities,” said Mr. Devolin.  “This funding of $290,000 will allow the Kawartha Lakes CFDC to continue to help businesses grow and assist communities in reaching their long-term economic development goals.”

In announcing Budget 2007, Canada’s New Government introduced a number of key initiatives in support of the small business sector, including:

  • reducing the federal paperwork burden on small business
  • reducing the tax compliance burden on small business
  • introducing tax reductions which will lower Canada’s tax rate on new business investment

The Kawartha Lakes CFDC provides services to support local economic development and small business growth, including:  access to capital; business services; community-based projects; and strategic community planning and socio-economic development.

Over the last year, the Kawartha Lakes CFDC invested $1.3 million in small and medium-sized businesses in the region, resulting in the creation or maintenance of 170 full and part-time jobs, and contributing to an enhanced business community.

“This Government of Canada investment enables us to continue to meet the increasing demand by area businesses and entrepreneurs for information, services and loans,” said Kawartha Lakes CFDC Chair, John Bennett.  “It will also support our partnerships with community stakeholders which help increase the quality of life for local residents.”

The Kawartha Lakes CFDC is one of 61 Community Futures Development Corporations in rural and Northern Ontario funded by FedNor’s Community Futures Program.
